Roulette Rules and Wheel Variants

Two live roulette tables in our check have La Partage written into their rules, and none has En Prison: Loto-Québec’s Casino de Montréal Roulette 14 and PlayNow’s Live French Roulette. On both, half of an even-money bet comes back when the ball lands on zero, which raises the return on those bets from 97.30% to 98.65%. Every other table whose rules we could read either uses a standard single-zero wheel without that rule or, in one case, a double-zero wheel. The table at the end of this page lists 19 live tables at six casinos, checked on October 19 and 20, 2026.

What this section covers, and why

This part of our site is about how roulette actually differs from table to table: the number of zeros on the wheel, the even-money rules, the payouts and the limits. The basic bets are the same everywhere. What changes the price of a spin is the wheel and the rule set, and those are printed in each table’s rules document, not in its name. A table called “French” is not proof of La Partage, and a table called “Roulette” can be any wheel. So we read the rules wherever a casino publishes them, and we mark everything else Not confirmed.

Which live tables use La Partage or En Prison?

Confirmed in the published rules:

• Casino de Montréal Roulette 14 (Loto-Québec). The French Roulette rules linked from this table use a single zero and La Partage: half of even-money bets is returned on zero. RTP is 98.65% on even-money bets and 97.30% on all others. Limits run from 10¢ to $10,000.
• Live French Roulette (PlayNow.com). The same rule and the same figures: single zero, La Partage, 98.65% on even-money bets, 97.30% on the rest. Limits are shown only in the game.

Named in the lobby, rules not visible to us:

• JeetCity lists “French Roulette La Partage” from Pragmatic Play Live in its Canadian live lobby. The rules open after login, so we could not confirm the wheel or how the rule is applied.
• Spinrise lists Live French Roulette and Live Roulette French VIP. The rules open after sign-up.

No En Prison anywhere we read. None of the rules documents at Loto-Québec, PlayNow or BetMGM (Ontario) contains an En Prison rule, under which an even-money bet stays on the table after a zero instead of losing half.

What do the two rules change in numbers?

On a single-zero wheel there are 37 pockets. An even-money bet such as red wins on 18 of them and loses on 19, so its expected return is 36/37, or 97.30%: a house edge of 2.70%.

La Partage returns half the stake when zero comes up. That halves the loss on one pocket out of 37, so the edge on even-money bets falls to 1/74, or 1.35%. The return becomes 98.65%, exactly the figure both rules documents print. On every other bet the rule changes nothing. We found no table with En Prison, so we do not price it here.

Which wheels did we find?

• Single zero. All eight Loto-Québec tables and all four PlayNow tables in our table use a European-style wheel with 1 to 36 and one zero.
• Double zero. BetMGM (Ontario) describes its live dealer American Roulette as a wheel with 38 slots, including 0 and 00. Straight-up bets pay 35 to 1, and the five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 pays 6 to 1.
• Not confirmed. BetRivers (Ontario) lists American Roulette from a $0.20 minimum and Elite Roulette from $1, but its table rules open only after login.

The double-zero wheel costs more. With 38 pockets, any bet paying 35 to 1 returns 36/38, so the house edge is 2/38, or 5.26%. The five-number bet is worse still: it wins on 5 of 38 pockets and pays 6 to 1, an expected return of 35/38, so the edge is 3/38, or 7.89%.

Triple-zero wheels exist elsewhere. Colorado’s gaming rules define a roulette wheel with 38 or 39 compartments, and Washington State approved an electronic “Roulette 000” for tribal casinos in January 2025. We did not find a triple-zero table in any rules document or lobby we read.

What the table shows

1. Limits are wide on provincial sites. Loto-Québec’s live table minimums run from 10¢ (Casino de Montréal Roulette 14) to $1 (Roulette A), and maximums reach $10,000 on five of its eight tables, $5,000 on Red Door Roulette and Roulette A, and $4,000 on Instant Roulette.
2. Multiplier tables pay less on straight-up bets. Loto-Québec lists 97.30% on its standard roulette, but 97.10% on straight-up bets at Lightning and Gold Vault Roulette and 97.09% at Red Door Roulette.
3. Providers are rarely named. Only the Red Door and Gold Vault rules name a provider, Evolution. JeetCity’s lobby names Pragmatic Play Live. The other tables do not say.
4. Public minimums are low in Ontario lobbies. BetRivers listed 24 roulette tables with minimum bets from $0.10 to $1 before login.

The guides in this section

• How to play casino roulette. The layout, every bet and its payout from Loto-Québec’s rules, and why the bet you choose changes how often you win but not the 97.30% average return.
• Roulette wheel numbers. Wheels with 37, 38 and 39 pockets, how each extra zero raises the edge on a straight-up bet from 2.70% to 5.26% to 7.69%, and which wheels we found at Canadian live tables.
• European versus American roulette. Why one extra pocket almost doubles the cost of every bet, and where you can play each version in Canada.
• La Partage and En Prison. How each rule works, what La Partage saves over 100 spins, and why a table’s name does not prove the rule applies.
• Why Martingale does not remove the house edge. The doubling system worked through against a real table limit, $1 to $5,000 at Loto-Québec’s Roulette A.

How we checked

We read the public rules documents that Loto-Québec and PlayNow link from each live table, the live dealer help pages at BetMGM (Ontario), and the public live lobbies at BetRivers (Ontario), JeetCity and Spinrise. Loto-Québec and PlayNow documents were read on October 19, 2026; BetRivers from an Ontario connection on October 20; JeetCity and Spinrise from a Quebec connection. Limits are what the casino displays on the table page, in Canadian dollars. Rules shown only after login are marked Not confirmed, and we did not open accounts. The date in each row shows when it was last checked.

What we could not confirm

• The wheel and even-money rules at JeetCity and Spinrise, and at BetRivers’ tables: the rules open only after login or sign-up.
• Table limits at PlayNow and BetMGM (Ontario): they are not in the public rules or help pages.
• The provider behind most Loto-Québec and PlayNow tables.

Check a table’s rules yourself

Before you place a bet, open the table’s “i”, help or rules panel and look for three lines: the number of zeros on the wheel, any mention of La Partage or En Prison, and the RTP for even-money bets. If the panel says 98.65% on even-money bets on a single-zero wheel, the half-back rule is in force. If it shows 97.30% for everything, it is not, whatever the table is called.
