La Partage and En Prison: How These Roulette Rules Change Even-Money Bets
La Partage and En Prison are two roulette rules that soften the loss on even-money bets when the ball lands on zero. Under La Partage, half of each even-money bet is returned on a zero, so instead of losing 2.70% on average on a single-zero wheel, those bets lose 1.35% and return 98.65%. Under En Prison, the even-money bet is held for the next spin instead of being settled at once. Both rules apply only to even-money bets (red or black, even or odd, low or high); every other bet keeps its standard return of 97.30%. In our check of Canadian live tables on October 19, 2026, La Partage appeared in the rules of two tables, at Loto-Québec and at PlayNow, and En Prison in none.

What does La Partage do?
When zero comes up, an even-money bet would normally lose in full. La Partage, French for “the sharing”, returns half of it. PlayNow’s rules for Live French Roulette put it plainly: half of even-money bets is returned when the ball lands on zero, with an RTP of 98.65% on even-money bets and 97.30% on all other bets. Loto-Québec’s French Roulette rules, linked from its Casino de Montréal Roulette 14 table, state the same rule and the same figures.
The arithmetic behind 98.65%: on a single-zero wheel, a $1 bet on red wins $1 on 18 of 37 numbers, loses $1 on 18 others, and on zero loses only 50 cents. The average result per spin is minus 0.5 divided by 37, a loss of about 1.35 cents per dollar staked. Without La Partage, the zero costs the full dollar and the average loss is 1/37, about 2.70 cents.
What does En Prison do?
En Prison, “in prison”, does not split the bet. When zero lands, the even-money bet stays on the table, held for the next spin instead of being settled. What happens next, including what a second zero does, is set in each table’s rules, and we did not find a live table in Canada with En Prison in its rules to quote.
To show the effect, take one simple version: if the held bet’s next spin wins, the stake is returned without a win; if it loses, the bet is lost. On a single-zero wheel, a held bet comes back with a probability of 18/37 and is lost with a probability of 19/37, so the average cost of the zero is 19/37 of the stake instead of the full stake. Per spin, that works out to a house edge of 19/1369, about 1.39%: very close to La Partage’s 1.35%. Other versions give slightly different figures, which is why the table’s own rules matter.
Which bets do the rules cover?
Only the six even-money bets: red, black, even, odd, low (1 to 18) and high (19 to 36). Straight-up numbers, splits, streets, corners, lines, columns and dozens are not covered; they keep the standard single-zero return of 97.30%. PlayNow and Loto-Québec state both figures side by side in their French Roulette rules.

The other live roulette rules we read did not include either rule: Loto-Québec’s Roulette, Immersive, Lightning, Instant, Red Door and Gold Vault Roulette documents; PlayNow’s Live Roulette, Live Auto Roulette and Live Lightning Auto Roulette documents; and BetMGM’s live American Roulette in Ontario. The full set is in our roulette rules and wheel variants table.
How much does La Partage save?
Take 100 spins at $10 on red, $1,000 staked. On a standard single-zero table the expected cost is about $27. At a La Partage table it is about $13.50. On a double-zero wheel without the rule, it would be about $53. For an even-money bettor already at a single-zero table, the rule halves the cost without any change to the stake.
It also changes how losses feel. On a standard table, zero takes the whole even-money stake about once every 37 spins. With La Partage, the same spin costs half.
Would the rule help on a double-zero wheel?
Less than you might hope. On a 38-pocket wheel, two pockets are zeros. If half of an even-money bet came back on either of them, the edge on those bets would fall from 2/38 (5.26%) to 1/38, about 2.63%: roughly the cost of a standard single-zero table without any special rule. BetMGM’s American Roulette rules in Ontario describe neither La Partage nor En Prison.
Does the table name tell you the rule applies?
Not reliably. Both tables where we found La Partage are called French Roulette, but the name is a hint, not a guarantee: other casinos list tables called French Roulette whose rules open only after login, so we could not confirm what they apply. Read the rule in the table’s own document.
Does La Partage make roulette beatable?
No. It halves the cost of the zero on even-money bets, but the edge is still 1.35% on every one of those bets, and no staking pattern changes that. Our page on the Martingale system works through why.
What we could not confirm
- A live table in Canada with En Prison in its rules.
- How La Partage is applied at tables whose name mentions it but whose rules open only after login.
Check a table yourself
Open the rules and look for two lines: the even-money RTP and any mention of La Partage or En Prison. A single-zero table with 98.65% on even-money bets has the rule in force; 97.30% for everything means it does not, whatever the table is called. Our guides to roulette bets and payouts and European versus American roulette cover the rest of the rules.
